Meet The Joyful Trader
Hi, I’m Dan Underhill.
I’m a professional options trader, educator, and coach...
...but before any of that, I had spent 22 years starting and running a business that designed custom software for clients in the accounting, government, legal and financial sectors. Additionally we had a division that created computer animation, and I had so much fun working on many different kinds of projects. Mainly we produced animations for litigation support however, not glitzy sci-fi movies.
It was through relationships I made from clients in the financial area that I began my journey into trading and investing almost 30 years ago. I struggled as I traded stocks, futures, and forex, but the people I knew who were consistently successful were utilizing options, plain and simple.
I spent a lot of time trying to understand them on my own and experienced two or three failed starts in trying to learn about them. Eventually I met a successful trader who mentored me in a way that helped it all make sense. It didn't come overnight, but over time the lightbulb went on and I've never traded anything else since.
Options were it and will always be for me.
As I traded options and grew my portfolio, I left the corporate world for a new challenge... that was becoming a Surgical Nurse. I earned my BSN at Oregon Health & Science University and have been working in the operating room or management for 11 years. It has been very rewarding and challenging and I am close to being at the end of that journey.
 A Different Approach to Trading
Over time—through wins, losses, and plenty of hard-earned lessons—I discovered that consistent trading has far less to do with prediction and far more to do with structure, probability, and discipline.
That realization changed everything.
My work focuses on how to think about trading, not what to chase.
I specialize in options strategies that emphasize probability, consistency, and repeatability—approaches designed to reduce emotional decision-making and create steadier outcomes over time. I’m especially drawn to strategies that allow traders to remain flexible, patient, and grounded, even when markets are noisy or unpredictable.
As a former nurse, I bring a practical, systems-based mindset to trading. I care deeply about process, preparation, and understanding risk before it becomes a problem. That perspective shapes everything I teach.

Why I Teach
The Joyful Trader exists because I believe trading education should be:
-
Clear and accessible
-
Honest about risk
-
Grounded in real-world experience
-
Focused on long-term sustainability
Whether through my course, one-on-one coaching, or free content, my goal is to help traders develop confidence—not by telling them what to do, but by helping them understand why they’re doing it.
I don’t promise easy money or fast results. What I offer instead is clarity, structure, and a framework you can adapt to your own goals and temperament.
Why 'Joyful'?
The word joyful was chosen very intentionally.
For me, trading has never been about constant excitement, adrenaline, or chasing the next big win.
In fact, I’ve found that those things tend to work against long-term success. The real goal—both in trading and in life—is steadiness. Clarity.
A sense that what you’re doing supports the life you want, rather than competing with it.
“Joyful” reflects a philosophy that trading should fit into a well-lived life, not take it over.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the quality of your decisions in the market is deeply connected to how you live outside of it.
Good sleep, a healthy diet, regular movement, time away from screens, music, laughter, and meaningful travel all contribute to better focus and emotional regulation. When those things are neglected, trading often becomes reactive, stressful, and unnecessarily hard.
I don’t believe success comes from staring at charts all day or feeling like you can never step away. I believe it comes from creating systems that allow you to be present for the rest of your life.
Work–life balance is not something I treat as optional or aspirational—it’s foundational. My own trading approach is guided by the idea that if a strategy demands constant attention, emotional strain, or sacrifices your health and relationships, it’s probably not sustainable. Trading should provide freedom, not quietly erode it.
The “joy” in The Joyful Trader isn’t about being happy every day or avoiding challenges. It’s about designing a trading life that leaves room for curiosity, creativity, and rest.
It’s about being able to close the laptop, go for a walk, play music, cook a good meal, or explore a new place—without feeling like you’re falling behind.
Ultimately, this philosophy is about alignment. When your trading supports a balanced, healthy, and fulfilling life, the results tend to follow more naturally. And when trading becomes just one meaningful part of a broader, joyful life—rather than the center of it—you’re far more likely to stick with it for the long run.
That’s what Joyful means to me.
